Betaine, also known as trimethylglycine or N,N,N-triethylammonium acetate, is an analog of glycine with three methyl groups. It is a colorless crystalline compound or white crystalline powder that is odorless and has a sweet taste. Betaine is highly deliquescent and soluble in water, methanol, and ethanol, but slightly soluble in ether. It is compatible with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) buffer mixtures and serves as a PCR enhancing reagent, improving the yield and specificity of PCR products, particularly for targets rich in GC content or those that form secondary structures.
